ANIMAL TESTING FOR COSMETICS
For 14 years of my life I’ve been buying cosmetics without wasting one single thought on what consequences my choices have on others.
For 14 years I never knew or even thought about the fact that products sold in local drug stores would even be allowed to test on other animals. What the bloody hell was I thinking and believing?
Sounds quite naive, doesn’t it? Well no, not really. It’s just good money put into manipulative advertisement strategies by brands and the cosmetic industry to shift the focus away from even thinking about animals in the context of cosmetics, skincare, and makeup.
Blinded by the manipulative advertising strategies of the companies, we simply do not know who pays the real price of the beauty that is sold to us.
@crueltyfreeintl states that half a million animals are used to test cosmetics around the world each year – that’s more than 1,369 today alone.
The practices that are used in animal testing know no boundaries of cruelty and violence.
If you are still buying products off of brands and you are not sure if they are animal-testing free and vegan, let me tell you one thing—You will and have to do your research after reading this and you will never buy them again!
Pregnant animals, mostly rabbits, and rats are forced to eat a cosmetics ingredient for about 28 days and are then killed along with their unborn babies.
Sometimes dogs alongside rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, and rats are forced to eat or inhale or have ingredients and chemicals rubbed into their shaved skin every day for 28 or 90 days, and are then killed.
There are many other ways to test cosmetics that don’t involve animals. These alternatives use simple organisms like bacteria, tissues, and cells from humans (in vitro methods), advanced computer-modeling techniques (in silico models), and studies with human volunteers. These scientifically advanced tests are often quicker, cheaper, and more reliable than the cruel and unnecessary animal tests they replace.
So why don’t brands follow those alternative methods? Find out here!
If you don’t know much about animal testing, I highly recommend you to check out my blog post “The Cruelty and Absurdity of Animal Testing & Experiments” on my website. It is also available in ➸ German.
