About the Design

“Ratical Vegan”
Many people consider a vegan lifestyle to be radical. But it’s not the decision to spare animals from suffering that’s radical—it’s the system that has made exactly that the norm. Billions of animals each year are bred, raised, and killed for something that hasn’t been necessary for a long time. If that’s the exception, then I’m happy to be “ratical.”

“Giving a rat’s ass”
The idiom “not giving a rat’s ass” means, in English, “I don’t care at all.” The statement behind it is speciesist to the core—a rat, its life, and its body are considered synonymous with something that has no value. This patch turns that statement on its head. Rats are highly intelligent, social animals—and yet they are the species most abused in experiments and devalued as “pests.” “Giving a rat’s ass” here means: Yes, I do care.

Together as a double patch, the two challenge what language has long normalized about animals—and assert that every life counts. Even that of a rat.
