NO ANIMAL LEFT BEHIND | THE TERM ‘SPECIESISM’

We all grow up in a world that prefers some species to others. Since we are little kids we get taught that some animals value more than others and that it is completely normal to love and appreciate some and to consume others. This is called speciesism.

Speciesism refers to the moral discrimination of living, sentient beings solely based on their species membership.

As far as reported, the term speciesism was introduced by the English philosopher Richard Ryder in the 1970s and subsequently popularized by the Australian philosopher Peter Singer.

Speciesism is very similar to other forms of irrational discrimination and prejudice but is not yet widely discussed and actively opposed politically and socially. The reason for this is that we are struggling with an anthropocentric view of the world, which praises humans as the highest creation and thus denies all other living beings their basic rights to life and freedom.

An influential argument against speciesism, advanced by Singer, rests on what he calls the principle of equal consideration of interests (PEC). Species are morally irrelevant characteristics when it comes to evaluating the same interests of different living beings, namely to live in peace and without suffering.

Of course, not all human and animal interests are the same. What interests a being has depends on the experiences they are capable of. What a being can accomplish does not determine a more or lesser life value and should deprive them of the right to life, integrity, and liberty. Since both animals and humans are capable of feeling pain, both have an interest in avoiding it.

The question we should be asking ourselves is, “Who do we think we are to simply dictate the life value of another living being and decide that that living being must die for a taste pleasure?”
