NONSENSICAL STATEMENTS
When you do online animal activism, you'll quickly realize that there are people (and often trolls) out there trying to shut you, your arguments, and activism down. It won’t always be a decent, appropriate and civilized discussion. I can promise you that.
Comments will range from the usual bullsh*t socially pressured ‘arguments,’ to personal attacks, accusations, completely made-up assumptions, and spamming of your profile and/or inbox. Why? They know animal exploitation and murder are wrong and they know that their morals and actions are put on the spot. It’s an uncomfortable conversation to have.
When speaking up for other animals, people who still do support the animal industry quickly feel attacked and fall into defense mode, mostly through anger. No wonder, because who would like to be pointed out that they are jointly responsible for animal cruelty.
Many try to talk their way out of it or give aRgUmEnTs which they have been conditioned to believe all their lives (like all of us). Others start to look for faults in the other person to distract from the actual topic. Most of them fall deeper into the downward spiral to cover up a lack of knowledge and to avoid admission. When some people run out of arguments, they insult or make fun of legitimate statements to cover up their insecurity and protect the personal image they want to have of themselves.
I only go into certain discussions to reach other people reading along and to use parts of the conversations for educational purposes. Certain statements can mentally get to you, and may slowly lead to panic or anxiety attacks, fatigue, or restlessness. Know your boundaries.
If you are a highly sensitive person, please know when to start and when to stop commenting before it gets to you. Know that you can put away the phone at any time. Be aware of your energy and how much you can give. Something I need to be more aware of as well.
If you’re not taking online discussions too well, know that you don’t have to do that kind of activism. There are many other ways to help spread the vegan message.
