ANIMAL TESTING FOR COMPANION/PET FOODS
Did you know that animal testing is common for pet foods? And I'm not speaking of taste tests. When one speaks of animal testing in the world of pet food, one is referring to laboratory animals that are subjected to invasive testing.
Companion—or more commonly named pet—foods were never on my radar before I started writing about animal testing/experimentation. To be honest, I thought commercial pet foods used animal flesh and all sorts of other body parts that couldn't be sold for human consumption.
When I did my YouTube video on a fully plant-based dog diet I learned of “4-D meats”, which means that the flesh for pet food comes from animals who were found Dead, Dying, Diseased or Disabled. 4-D animals are not necessarily slaughtered. They are also found dead in the field, feedlot, or barn.
Companies are making millions of dollars/euros in profits selling pet food made with 4-D meats and other wastes NO ANIMAL SHOULD EVER CONSUME.
When animal testing is done for pet food labs test acceptance and digestibility of the feeds. As we all know animal testing facilities conduct unspeakably cruel and inhumane studies. The thing is, nothing ever has to be tested on animals.
Why are animal tests done for pet foods? Animal individuals used in pet food tests serve the purpose of a measuring instrument to make pet food more profitable for the selling companies. Several healthy animals are confined separately and forced to eat a certain amount of f.e. proteins, fiber, and minerals over a specified time to ensure that pets are getting at least the minimum requirements the company claims to. It also happens that healthy animals are made sick to test feed specially adapted to the disease.
Several tissue samples are taken from their intestine under anesthesia as well as their excretions. Afterward, the experiments continue with a differently composed feed.
It is easy to imagine the psychological and physical strain this puts on individuals. A pain, suffering, and lack of control that no one wants to imagine. Many individuals just can’t handle the unbearable pain they are put through.
