THE STORY OF BRITCHES
Have you heard of Britches’ story before? Anyone needs to know about it!
On April 20th, 1985, 36 years and 27 days ago, the ALF #animalliberationfront famously raided UC Riverside (California, USA) and liberated almost 1,000 mutilated animals, including cats, rabbits, pigeons, deer, opossums, mice, and 5-week-old monkey Britches. For his first five weeks of life, Britches knew nothing but isolation and darkness. If he would have grown up in his natural habitat—the rainforests of Southeast Asia—he would have spent his first nine months enjoying the warmth of the sun, playing with other monkeys, being groomed and protected by his nurturing mother and the other female members of the group.
As an infant, he was taken away from his mother on the very night that he was born. His life was seen as ‘valuable for research and science.’
“They crudely sewed his eyes shut with thick thread and strapped a bulky, heavy electronic sonar device that made a constant screeching sound to his tiny head—all of which was extremely distressing to him. Then, they locked him inside a barren wire cage, all alone, as part of their useless experiment.” @peta
After his rescue, he was taken to a vet who tended to him and was brought to live his life in a sanctuary living with a foster mom who took him in. Britches lived until he was 20. He got lucky, but millions of animals in laboratories never get that chance.
Direct action animal activists are still seen as troublemakers, criminals, and even terrorists. This image is of course fueled by those who still support this system being either very well aware of the situation, injustice, and exploitation or totally in the dark. Those activists are the ones who act, risking their own lives and freedom to save other lives. #freedomfighters
If it weren’t for these activists, we wouldn’t know much about what goes on behind closed doors. Silence agreements gladly seal what the public is not supposed to know.
Ask yourself who the real criminals and terrorists are. You already know.
