WE NEED TO STOP OVERCOMPLICATING IT
Having online or offline conversations with not-yet-vegans I often feel like the person I am talking to is completely overcomplicating it.
And I can relate to their thoughts and feelings of uncertainty, insecurity, and overstress because I have been there too—overcomplicating everything when it is easy.
I am saying this all the time and it is so important to say it at any time: veganism is not about us. It is not a diet and it is not about how it makes us feel. It is about the rights, and liberation of animals. It is a social justice issue. Fullstop.
You see an injustice done to someone, you speak up! You actively DO something!
And yes, having an ideally whole foods plant-based diet and living with a vegan attitude to life can have many positive side effects on us too (if we want it and work on it), but it is not the focus. If we constantly make it about ourselves we miss what it is really about. But not only that, but we also make it way harder on ourselves, constantly finding excuses why we just can’t do it.
If we know WHY (other sentient beings) we are doing it, everything else falls into place. Believe me. Everything else becomes easy all of a sudden because we understand Why it is important and automatically shift our focus.
Ask yourself what’s more important? The life of an animal or a certain product you miss having. I promise you, you won’t miss it at all if you start understanding the horrors the animals have to go through for it.
How do you start knowing Why you have to change? First of all, start asking yourself if you feel that it’s morally right to kill someone who doesn’t want to die. Secondly, ask yourself if your sensual pleasure is more important than their life? Now ask yourself if you would apply the same “justifications” to any other situation too?
We have an ethical understanding. By reading about what is done to animals or watching unadulterated documentaries showing the truth of the animal industry like “Dominion” you should be able to know right from wrong. Watch it and see how you feel. How you truly feel about it.
