THE (AB)USE OF HORSES
The (ab)use of horses is still a socially accepted form of animal cruelty. It is time to shed some light on this exploitative form of human entertainment and form of oppression.
Horses are also species that fall victim to human supremacy. They are exploited in many ways for entertainment and profit. They are bred to be enslaved and do the work for humans, even today.
Horseback riding, horse sports, horse racings, horse shows, and horse carriages are just a few examples of how horse individuals are put to use. But nobody is seeing the victim or judging the situation out of the victims’ position.
Horses are kept in confined spaces, having to endure unnatural surroundings, even threatening ones not only physically but also mentally. When speaking up about the problem, the excuses are always the same stating:
“They are bred for this.”
“They don’t mind.” “They enjoy being ridden.”—No, they are just conditioned to endure their fate.
“It has always been this way.”
“You should see their stalls and paddock.”
“I have such a great connection with my horse this way!”
“I care about him*her.”
All of these are simply poor excuses and even poorer ‘justifications’ to keep on exploiting, using, abusing, and challenging the threat of accidents and injuries. And it all is still socially accepted by the majority of people.
Nobody ever asks themselves if they would like to switch with an individual in this industry! The use of horses in any way is still for personal interest and benefits because horses can run and be active without someone sitting on their back or forcing them to pull carriages.
It’s a business and horses are the means to an end. If it’s for personal entertainment or simply profits.
Some oppressors even see themselves as “saviors” because they give the animals “a purpose/meaning.” I need not mention how absurd this is?
From stable to table.
If horses can’t carry out the work anymore they are either shot, end up as (pet)“food” or get abandoned. If they are “lucky,” they will be adopted by a sanctuary that will take care of them, their physical and mental abuse until their natural end of life. Their past can never be erased, their trauma never is cured, even though they are finally safe.
